George Duke 

Very sad to hear today of George Duke’s passing just over a year after his wife. Perhaps because he never took himself too seriously he has never been seen as the great innovator and stylist that he was.  He has a fantastic body of work - his own solo work, his contributions to the music of everyone from Cannonball Adderley to Michael Jackson, his collaborations with Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham, his production of everyone from Flora Purim to Jeffrey Osborne, and of late his influence on the likes of Thundercat.

My own favourite period of George was his contribution to Frank Zappa’s greatest band in the early 70s and his records on MPS that still sound fresh today.  Ironically what I expect will be the definitive version of Zappa’s Roxy & Elsewhere featuring prime George will be released in the next few weeks.

The clip is of the Billy Cobham / George Duke Band doing a funky (and funny) version of ‘Red Baron’.

Rest in peace and thank you George.
